Maybee man, 43, killed in single-car crash

MAYBEE, Mich. -- A 43-year-old man was killed early Thursday when his vehicle struck a culvert and flipped.

Dr. Douglas Baltrip, a local optometrist who resided in Maybee, Mich., was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office.

Dr. Baltrip, driving a 2005 Ford F-250, was northbound on Steffas Road, north of Heiss Road, in Exeter Township, when the crash occurred. Authorities are unclear why his truck veered off the west side of the road about 2:30 a.m.

No one else was in the vehicle at the time of the crash. Dr. Baltrip was wearing a seat belt, authorities said.
