Firefighters save dog from burning house
12/25/2011City firefighters rescued a dog from a vacant house in North Toledo early Saturday.
Lt. Matthew Hertzfeld, spokesman for the Toledo Fire Department, said firefighters found the dog on the second floor of 1712 N. Erie St.
It was not known why the dog was in the house. Lieutenant Hertzfeld said there were indications of gangs using the house.
Firefighters in Engine 3 were returning from another run at 2:20 a.m. when they saw flames.
They stopped to extinguish the fire and called for help from other units, Lieutenant Hertzfeld said.
"As they were searching [the house] the dog was discovered up there. It was pretty surprising," Lieutenant Hertzfeld said.
The dog was turned over to the custody of the Lucas County Dog Warden.
The property belongs to Merivale Investments LLC of Tarpon Springs, Fla., according to the Lucas County Auditor's Web site.
The fire is being investigated as an arson.
