Woman charged with stabbing mom

The 30-year-old Toledo woman accused of stabbing and beating her mother late Tuesday was arraigned Wednesday morning.

Angelina Williams, 4435 Merry Ln., is charged with felonious assault. Bond was set at $75,000; Ms. Williams is being held in the Lucas County jail. She is expected to appear in court again for a preliminary hearing on Jan. 3.

She is accused of assaulting her mother, Cathy Ellis-Williams, 55, inside the South Toledo home they share.

Ms. Ellis-Williams was taken to the University of Toledo Medical Center, the former Medical College of Ohio Hospital, with injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening, said Toledo police Sgt. Joe Heffernan. A medical center spokesman said Ms. Ellis-Williams was in fair condition Wednesday morning.

The suspect's three children, who all were home at the time and were nearby when their mother allegedly attacked their grandmother, were taken to Lucas County Children Services.

Officers responded to the home, near Hill Avenue and South Reynolds Road, about 10:09 p.m. Tuesday after it appears the victim called 911. The dispatcher reported only hearing a "female caller sounds elderly just yelling and screaming," according to a Toledo police report.

Officers knocked on the front door numerous times and went to various windows around the property looking inside.

One officer called out that police were at the residence and he reported hearing "a faint voice ... inside saying, ‘Help me. Break the window if you have to,' " the report states.

Officers then pried open the storm and main doors at the front of the residence.

The victim was found on the floor, covered in her own blood, while the suspect was "sitting right next to the victim's head, repeatedly hitting the victim with a long metal rod."

Police say they repeatedly told the suspect to drop the weapon and, when she did not, one officer drew his service weapon and another officer and a sergeant drew their stun guns, according to the police report.

The officer with the stun gun fired and connected with the suspect, stunning her several times; the sergeant also fired his stun gun, but did not hit the suspect.

Despite resistance from the suspect, the officers were able to handcuff her, although the suspect was still holding a knife. Once she was cuffed, she continued to resist officers, which prompted an officer to stun the suspect four times in the back, according to a Toledo police report.

The suspect was treated for her injuries at UTMC before she was taken to the jail.
