Ex-teacher accused of inappropriate link to kids

A former Maumee High School teacher and president of the Maumee teachers' union faces allegations he engaged in inappropriate conduct with minors before he taught in Maumee.

Guy C. Cameron resigned Nov. 30 shortly after district officials were told of the allegations, district spokesman Nancy Sayre said.

He voluntarily surrendered his high school teaching certificate Dec. 12 to the Ohio Department of Education, and the State Board of Education is set to permanently revoke his certificate Tuesday.

Mr. Cameron made no admissions when he surrendered his certificate, "for the reason that he no longer intends to continue teaching following an allegation that he engaged in inappropriate conduct with minors while he was in college," according to state documents detailing proposed grounds for disciplinary action.

If the board approves the revocation, Mr. Cameron would be ineligible to reapply for state certification to teach.

Mr. Cameron was a business teacher at the high school; Ms. Sayre said she believed he was hired by the district during the 1988-89 school year. He was president of the Maumee Education Association until he resigned. The union held a special meeting in December to replace Mr. Cameron after the resignation, according to meeting minutes posted on the association's Web site.

Mr. Cameron did not return a message left Monday on his cell phone.

District officials were contacted in late November by an individual about allegations of conduct by Mr. Cameron before 1988, said Ms. Sayre, who did not know who contacted the district. Mr. Cameron resigned and the matter was turned over to the state, she said.
