Fire at senior complex forces brief evacuation

A small apartment fire Monday morning caused a brief evacuation of a South Toledo public housing complex for the elderly, authorities said.

No one was injured, according to the Toledo Fire Department.

Fire crews arrived about 7:05 a.m. at 5836 Southwyck Blvd. A sprinkler system extinguished the fire within a few minutes, according to the fire report. The building was evacuated after smoke detectors alerted residents to the fire, firefighters said.

Residents were allowed to return to their apartments shortly before 9 a.m.

The number of residents temporarily displaced from their apartments was unavailable. The building has 102 living units, according to Lucas County records. Built in 1977, it is owned by the Lucas Metropolitan Housing Authority.

The fire was caused by unspecified equipment failure; the damage was estimated at $22,000, the report said.
