Fire of unknown cause guts Maplewood house

A fire of as yet unknown origin destroyed a vacant house Thursday on Maplewood Avenue near North Detroit Avenue in central Toledo, authorities said.

There were no injuries, according to the Toledo Fire Department.

Fire crews arrived about 3:45 a.m. and saw fire and smoke coming from a two-story wood frame house at 2554 Maplewood. Firefighters had the fire under control within about an hour. Arson investigators were notified.

The damage was estimated at $60,800, according to a fire report. A cause remained under investigation. The Lucas County Auditor’s Web site lists Gina Whitaker as the owner of the house, built in 1913.
