An apartment building fire near Monroe Street and Whiteford Road in West Toledo has been ruled accidental, authorities said Tuesday.

The fire Monday night in Carriage Hill Apartments was caused by discarded smoking material. No one was injured, according to the fire report.

Fire crews arrived about 10:25 p.m. and found a small fire in a wall behind a water heater in an apartment at 4824 Lerado Rd. Firefighters evacuated four apartments. Three were damaged, according to department records.

The American Red Cross Greater Toledo Area Chapter provided accommodations for the evacuees. A damage estimate was unavailable.

A second fire that broke out early Tuesday near Lagrange Street and West Manhattan Boulevard in north Toledo caused an estimated $15,000 damage to a vacant house, authorities said. No one was injured.

Fire crews were called to the fire at the 1 1/2-story, wood-frame house at 3334 Maple St. at about 2:12 a.m.

The house, built in 1899 and valued at $42,200 by the Lucas County auditor, was vacated about a week ago.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
