SANDUSKY — An inmate died early Tuesday at the Erie County jail, authorities said.

Robert C. Baswell, Jr., 47, of Vermilion, Ohio, was pronounced dead Tuesday morning at Firelands Regional Medical Center, according to the Erie County Sheriff’s Office. He had health problems, said Capt. Todd Dempsey, the jail administrator.

Jail personnel last saw the inmate alive about 1:45 a.m. Tuesday, during a routine check. When another check was done about five minutes later, Baswell was found unresponsive and was rushed to the hospital, Captain Dempsey said.

The inmate was in the jail since Oct. 17. His charges included robbery, theft, and possession of criminal tools, the captain said.

Sandusky is 55 miles east of Toledo.
