Police officer's suspensions upheld
3/9/2012The Sylvania Township trustees have upheld the suspensions of a police officer disciplined for unholstering his weapon in violation of department policy and sleeping on the job.
Michael Borman received a four-day suspension for the first infraction involving his weapon, which occurred Nov. 16, and a five-day suspension for the second violation, which happened Nov. 26, township police Chief Rob Boehme said.
The chief said he imposed the discipline administratively after Mr. Borman was found to have violated policy by unholstering his sidearm in the passenger seat of a cruiser. He was caught sleeping in a cruiser one morning 10 days later. Both suspensions have been served.
He filed grievances in both cases and the matters went to the trustees for adjudication. During a meeting Wednesday, they unanimously agreed with the disciplinary actions. The officer also is barred from working overtime for six months and is ineligible to serve in a command capacity for one year.
The officer earlier had been suspended for three days for being at fault in an accident that totaled a police cruiser, officials said.
