UT student held in robbery
2nd suspect still sought in invasion of apartment
5/9/2012One day after finishing spring semester, a University of Toledo student is accused of robbing several other students at gunpoint inside a Dorr Street apartment.
Cassious Cook, 20, of Dayton is due back in court on Monday for a preliminary hearing on one count of aggravated burglary. He is being held in the Lucas County jail in lieu of $75,000 bond.
According to a police incident report, several college students were robbed by two men who entered the apartment through an unlocked sliding glass door and held a gun on them inside the victims' apartment at 3414 Dorr at 2:30 a.m. Saturday.
The incident report states that the suspects took multiple items and fled in separate cars, but that two of the victims chased one of the suspects' vehicles. They flagged down an Ottawa Hills police sergeant, who stopped a car at Secor Road and Edgevale Road and found the victims' property and a handgun in the trunk. Police are still trying to identify the second suspect.
"We're pleased that we had that arrest on Saturday night," University of Toledo police Chief Jeff Newton said.
Chief Newton said the amount of crime reported on and around campus is about normal, although the department has had several reports of robberies and burglaries.
One student, the chief said, reported being robbed on West Bancroft Street, across from the university, just after 11 p.m. April 30 by a man who showed he was carrying a gun in his waistband.
The chief said investigators would be looking into whether the suspect arrested in the Dorr Street burglary has been implicated in other incidents.
He added that, most of the time, perpetrators of crime near the university are not university students.
"You want to be very aware of your surroundings," Chief Newton said.
"It's always best if you can walk with people at night, you want to have a cell phone handy, walk confidently, make eye contact with people. If you feel like you're being followed, go to a public place."
