BOWLING GREEN — The mother of a 3-month-old boy who died Saturday at his Plain Township home told a 911 operator that she had just awoken from a nap when her husband found their child unresponsive.

“I just woke up from my nap and my husband found my baby vomited,” she said, after calling 911 at 5:50 p.m. “We’re trying to resuscitate him. We can’t get him to breathe, and I just woke up from my nap.”

Carter Steinmiller, son of Brian and Rebecca Steinmiller, was later pronounced dead at Wood County Hospital.

Wood County Sheriff Mark Wasylyshyn said deputies and medical personnel found the baby’s death suspicious, although no charges have been filed in the case.

“Charges will be forthcoming but not until we know exactly what the cause of death is,” he said.

Det. Rod Smith said the child’s parents were interviewed Saturday but have not spoken with investigators since then. An autopsy was conducted by the Lucas County Coroner’s Office, but Wood County Coroner Dr. Douglas Hess told detectives it could take at least a week for the results to be released, Detective Smith said.
