A Toledo man was shot in the central city Tuesday night apparently during a botched robbery, authorities said.

Lashaone Evans, 18, of Grand Avenue was taken to the University of Toledo Medical Center, the former Medical College of Ohio Hospital, with a gunshot wound to the big toe on his left foot, Toledo police said. His condition was not immediately available at the hospital.

It was unclear whether the man was shot intentionally or if the gun accidentally discharged during a struggle, police said in their report.

The victim told police he was on his way to a relative’s house after playing basketball at City Park, walking on the sidewalk at City Park Avenue and Humboldt Street about 9 p.m. when a man came up from behind, asked him to hand over whatever he had, and then grabbed him by the shirt.

When the victim tried to pull away, he was shot. The assailant then ran away, police said in their report.

The gunman was described as black, light skinned, about 20 years old, 6 feet, 3 inches tall, and weighing about 150 pounds. He was wearing black pants and a red T-shirt, according to the report.

The assailant was last seen running west on Humboldt, police said.

There was no word of arrests.
