Fire ignited at Acme Power Plant

6/6/2012

Debris at the decommissioned Acme Power Plant was ignited today by crews using propane cutting torches to salvage metal from the East Toledo structure, firefighters said.

Toledo firefighters extinguished the fire in the west side of the partially razed building. Smoke billowed from the fire, which started at about 4:20 pm.

Acme Dismantling LLC is under contract to perform work at the site. Workers said fiber glass, roofing material, and insulation caught fire.

Acme Dismantling last year won the bid on the project through Burge Wrecking and will paid the city of Toledo - which owns the property - a total of $50,000 for the work. In return Acme Dismantling has salvage rights to the steel.

The vacant building sits on the north side of the Marina District, which is mostly owned by Chinese investment firm Dashing Pacific Group Ltd.
