A South Toledo woman was in critical condition in a burn unit Saturday after she collapsed while trying to escape a fire in her home Friday evening.

Toledo police officers Friday night rescued Elizabeth James, no age available, who did not regain consciousness and was taken to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center with severe burns, authorities said.

A neighbor called in the fire at 3801 Ben Lomond Ct. about 8:40 p.m. The fire was extinguished in five minutes, battalion Chief Peter Jaegly said. He estimated the damage at $20,000.

Her dog survived, authorities said.
