Forest, Ohio man recalls shooting in Colorado

FOREST, Ohio -- An 18-year-old Hardin County man who was injured in Colorado during a midnight showing of the Batman trilogy told a crowd today that he didn't know immediately what had happened to him inside the theater.

"It wasn't until we got out in the lobby that it finally hit me that this was bad, this was so bad," Gage Hankins said at a news conference in Forest, Ohio where he was flanked by his parents and younger brother Jackson, 14, who was with him at the time.

Gage Hankins showed off his arm that remained wrapped up in a bandage.

He was taken by emergency medical responders to a hospital where he underwent surgery Friday morning to remove four pieces of shrapnel from his right forearm.

He was seated in a theater adjacent to the shooting and was wounded in the right forearm by flying shrapnel.

The Hankins family was in Denver for the 15th annual FRIENDS Convention, a three-day conference for people who stutter. The four family members wore their FRIENDS T-shirts to the news conference.

The village of Forest is in Hardin County's northeast corner at the Wyandot County border, about 70 miles south of Toledo.
