Washington Township police charge teen with assault, resisting arrest

A 14-year-old boy was arrested today after police pulled him out of the Ottawa River, officials said.

Washington Township police Chief Christopher Kaiser said the boy has been charged with two counts of assault and one count of resisting arrest. He is currently being held in the Lucas County Juvenile Justice Center.

Chief Kaiser said an officer was responding to a report of a person sleeping on playground equipment at Shoreland Park. The officer woke the boy, who then took off running.

The officer caught the boy and the two wrestled on the ground before the boy got away again, Chief Kaiser said.

A nearby witness who tried to stop the boy was allegedly head butted by the teen, the chief said. The teen then reportedly jumped into the river.

A Toledo police incident report states that Toledo Sgt. William Dunn, who was off duty at the time, took his pontoon boat into the middle of the river with an on-duty unit to get the suspect.

Chief Kaiser said township officers have been looking for the boy, who was reported as a runaway, for about a month.
