PORT CLINTON — The Ohio Highway Patrol continued their probe Friday into an incident in which a freight train and a car collided on Tettau Road at Norfolk Southern Railroad tracks near this Ottawa County community the night before, injuring two people.

Kenneth Godfrey, 32, of Port Clinton, a passenger in the car driven by Jeremiah Pitts, 35, of Lacarne, Ohio, was flown to Mercy St. Vincent’s Medical Center, where he was listed in fair condition.

Mr. Pitts was driven to Magruder Hospital in Port Clinton. His condition was not released.

The car was driving south on Tettau in Ottawa County’s Erie Township about 10 p.m. Thursday when the driver failed to stop at the railroad crossing, causing the car to strike a train car on the right side, the patrol reported.

The car was then pushed into the railroad crossing sign, where it stopped, the patrol said.

No one on the train was injured, troopers said.

The railroad crossing lights and gates were operating correctly at the time of the crash.
