The death of a Lake Township man who died a week after he was punched while in the parking lot of a South Toledo strip club has been ruled a homicide.

John R. White, 38, died of cerebral trauma as a result of a skull fracture after he was punched and fell and hit his head on the concrete, said Dr. Diane Scala-Barnett, a Lucas County deputy coroner. He was taken to University of Toledo Medical Center, the former Medical College of Ohio, where he died Saturday. The autopsy was performed Monday.

Mr. White was hit about 2:55 a.m. on Sept. 29 outside Deja Vu, 135 S. Byrne Rd., where he worked security, by a man who had been asked to leave the club, a Toledo police report said. The man said he was going to shoot everyone in the place and, once outside, punched two club security workers, including Mr. White, police said.

Police did not report whether the other worker needed medical care.

Jamieius Smith, 29, of 2029 Southmoor Dr., was arrested after the incident and charged with felonious assault. Toledo Municipal Court Judge Timothy Kuhlman set bond on Oct. 1 at $500,000 and Smith remained held in the Lucas County jail late Monday.

Smith is scheduled to appear in court again at 9 a.m. today.

This is the 34th homicide in the metro Toledo area; the 25th in the city of Toledo.
