MONROE — A former Monroe County Road Commission employee has been charged with stealing nearly $90,000 from the office, the Michigan State Police said.

JoAnne Aichler, 65, of LaSalle, was arraigned today in District Court on one count of embezzlement. She was released on her own recognizance. Judge Jack Vitale set a preliminary examination for Oct. 16.

The charge stems from a state police investigation that began in February when the road commission discovered suspicious bookkeeping at its office on South Telegraph Road in Monroe. An ensuing audit confirmed that $89,000 was missing over the last several years.

Ms. Aichler was fired during the investigation. She worked at the commission for 23 years.

The state police said the commission’s finance department has adopted new procedures and additional checks and balances to avoid future problems.
