A man was injured in a fire of a yet unknown origin that damaged an apartment building in South Toledo today, authorities said.

The man, whose name was not released, was treated at the scene after escaping from the fire on his own, Toledo fire Lt. Matthew Hertzfeld said. He did not say what the injuries were.

The first fire crews arrived at 2243 Rockspring Rd. about 4:07 a.m., by which time the victim had escaped. They helped another man get from the second floor of the two-story, four-unit building to safety and attacked heavy flames that were coming from the second floor, Lieutenant Hertzfeld said.

Firefighters had the blaze under control in about 20 minutes. As of about 9:15 a.m., fire crews were still at the scene to make sure that no hot spots ignited, the fire lieutenant said.

Damage from the fire was estimated at about $52,000, he said. The cause of the fire was under investigation.

The Lucas County auditor’s Web site lists Arland and Marguerite Lovett as the owners of the building. The brick building was built in 1977.
