The Toledo man accused of shooting five people -- killing two of them -- before being fatally shot by police in Lake Township purchased the gun used less than an hour before police received the first 911 call.

Lake Township police Chief Mark Hummer said today that Jorge Duran, Jr., 24, bought the gun from Bass Pro Shop at 8:37 p.m. Tuesday; the first 911 call was made at 9:34 p.m.

Mr. Duran, who was shot and killed by police responding to the scene at the Eastpointe on the Mall apartment complex, did not have a criminal record, Chief Hummer said.

In Ohio, a person without a felony record or other outlined stipulations can purchase a gun on site from a gun dealership.

Killed in the shooting were Amber Jones, 26, and Jorge Duran III, 3. Mr. Duran was the estranged boyfriend of Ms. Jones and the father of the toddler.

Injured were Steve Brown, 26, Janet Brown, 45, and Mark McCrory, 39.

Mr. Brown is being treated for a reported gunshot wound to the head at Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center where is he listed in critical condition, a hospital spokesman said.

Both Ms. Brown, Mr. Brown's mother, and Mr. McCrory were interviewed by police at the hospital on Wednesday, and "pretty much confirmed what we believed happened," Chief Hummer said.

Ms. Jones was the first to be shot when Mr. Duran was at her Lakepointe Drive apartment, one they shared until a recent break up. Mr. Duran picked up their son and took him to the Laketon Terrace apartment.

He knocked on the door there, with Mr. Brown answering, and opened fire.

Mr. Brown was shot first, but managed to crawl out of a back door, Chief Hummer said.

Ms. Brown was one of the two people from the complex to dial 911.
