MONROE -- An unidentified driver was killed in a single-car crash Friday afternoon in Berlin Township, the Monroe County Sheriff's Office reported.

A Chevrolet Corsica automobile that had been northbound on Bomeia Road, approaching Newport Road, went off the left side of the roadway into a cornfield and traveled several hundred feet before striking a tree and catching fire, deputies said.

The driver, whose name was withheld pending notification of relatives, was declared dead at the scene of the crash reported at 2:53 p.m., according to the report. The crash remained under investigation later Friday, but alcohol was not believed to be a factor, deputies said.
