BGSU puts professor on leave with pay
10/27/2012Bowling Green State University has suspended with pay the chairman of its department of architecture and environmental design after he was charged last month with drunken driving and striking a police officer in Toledo.
Stanley G. Guidera, 56, of Perrysburg was placed on paid leave Oct. 16 after BGSU learned of the charges, University Spokesman Dave Kielmeyer said Friday. Employed at the university since 1998, Mr. Guidera is a full professor and is paid $84,626 a year, Mr. Kielmeyer said.
“The University is investigating the incident. A final decision on Guidera’s status at the University will follow that inquiry,” BGSU said in a statement.
According to documents filed in Toledo Municipal Court, Mr. Guidera is accused of striking Toledo Public Schools resource officer David Vnuck with his vehicle about 10 p.m. Sept. 21, then attempting to flee the scene.
Mr. Vnuck, a retired Toledo police lieutenant, was not seriously injured in the incident that occurred while he directed traffic outside Start High School after a football game, TPS spokesman Patty Mazur said. The police report stated Mr. Guidera was “highly intoxicated,” failed multiple field-sobriety tests, and refused to take a breath test.
Mr. Guidera was charged with felonious assault, aggravated vehicular assault, two counts of driving under the influence, failure to stop after an accident, and failure to control. Court records list two prior drunken-driving convictions for him.
Mr. Guidera was released on $50,000 bond shortly after his Sept. 24 arraignment. His next court appearance is scheduled for Tuesday.
