Fatal crash reported on northbound Interstate 75 near Monroe

MONROE -- An early afternoon fatal crash on northbound I-75 involving three tractor-trailers backed up traffic for miles as motorists were directed off the interstate at North Otter Creek Road in Monroe County's LaSalle Township.

Monroe County sheriff's deputies said that Christopher Finney, 62, of Sheridan, Mich., was northbound in the center lane near Mortar Creek Road in Monroe Township about 12:45 p.m. when his rig rear-ended a semi driven by Dwayne Samson, 45, of Memphis, Mich., and then struck a semi driven by Larry Coss, Jr., of Chesaning, Mich.

Mr. Finney was pronounced dead at the scene, deputies said. The other drivers were not injured.

Alcohol did not appear to be a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation, deputies said.

The interstate was closed through early evening.
