MONROE -- The Monroe County Sheriff's Office today identified the individual killed in a Frenchtown Township fire as Bea Hankey, 75.

Officials were called to the Frenchtown Place Apartments, 1201 N. Macomb St., at 11:25 a.m. Tuesday on the report of a fire alarm. While crews were en route, the call was upgraded to smoke showing from the building.

The first officer on scene, Deputy Joseph Gore, found the fire burning inside of a seventh-floor apartment and he began to evacuate other residents because of heavy smoke inside the building.

Ms. Hankey lived in the apartment where the fire started; the cause of the fire has not yet been determined,  but foul play is not suspected, officials said.
