PALMYRA, MIch. -- Authorities tonight were trying to identify a woman's body found earlier in the day by a farmer in Palmyra Township while he was working in his field.

Lenawee County Sheriff Jack Welsh said the farmer reported at 1:20 p.m. he had found the body in a field on Scott Highway near Station Road. The body appears to have been there for some time, Sheriff Welsh said, and has partially decomposed. The body appears to be of an adult female, but was too badly decomposed to determine a possible age range or race, he said.

Authorities remained on the scene tonight. Sheriff Welsh said there was no initial indication of how the woman died, but that foul play is believed because of evidence found near the body. He would not elaborate.

The body was taken to Bixby Medical Center, where an autopsy will be performed.
