Trial date set for couple in child-assault case

A January trial date was set in Lucas County Common Pleas Court Monday for an East Toledo couple allegedly caught on video assaulting their adoptive child.

Joshua and Courtney Waxler, both 24, of 2355 Seaman St., are each charged with two alternate counts of endangering children. Each faces up to eight years in prison if convicted.

Judge Myron Duhart scheduled a Jan. 14 trial date.

Police allege that Mr. Waxler assaulted the 3-year-old child with an athletic shoe and that Mrs. Waxler choked her and threw her to the ground during a February incident.

The assault reportedly was recorded on a cell phone by a relative.

The injured girl and a 5-year-old girl had been in the Waxlers' care for about three years.
