A Toledo man is in police custody, charged with robbing an Oregon bank early today.

Robert Fletcher, 49, whose last known address was on Alexis Road, was still being questioned by Oregon and Toledo police at about 4 p.m., said Oregon police Chief Mike Navarre.

The exact charges were not immediately known.

Charter One Bank, 3024 Navarre Ave., was robbed just after 10 a.m. Police responding to the scene knew the suspect fled westbound, and visited nearby businesses, looking for possible surveillance video, the chief said.

Police stopped at Comfort Inn, 2930 Navarre, about a block from the bank, and a clerk said a "suspicious guy" had stayed there the night before, paying with cash, Chief Navarre said.

The clerk wrote down the license plate number of the vehicle the man was using, which led police to the vehicle's owner. The woman said she knew Mr. Fletcher and that he had her vehicle, and pointed them toward an area where they might find him.

Staked out in East Toledo, Oregon police spotted Mr. Fletcher walking through an alley at Nevada Street and East Broadway where he was arrested at about 2 p.m.

When police searched the room where Mr. Fletcher stayed the night before, they found red dye from a dye pack that had exploded, Chief Navarre said.
