5 who died of carbon monoxide poisoning were not drugged

Toxicology test results returned to the Lucas County Coroner showed that three children, their grandmother, and uncle, who died of carbon monoxide poisoning inside a West Toledo garage, did not have drugs in their systems.

The five were found dead on Nov. 12, inside a car parked in a garage in the 5100 block of Harvest Lane.

Killed in the murder-suicides were Sandy Ford, 56; Andy Ford, 32; Paige Hayes, 10; Logan Hayes, 7; and Madalyn Hayes, 5.

Police have said that the deaths were premeditated by at least four days, based on evidence recovered at the scene. The three children had been living with their grandparents and uncle at the Harvest Lane home since 2009, so their parents, Chris and Mandy Hayes, could focus attention on a fourth child with behavioral issues.

The grandparents never had court-ordered custody, so when Mr. and Mrs. Hayes requested the children move back in, Mrs. Ford apparently became upset, believing her grandchildren were still in danger.

The children moved back in with their parents days before they were found dead. Mrs. Ford picked the children up from school, just moments after Mrs. Hayes dropped them off, and took them back to the Harvest Lane home where they were found dead hours later.
