A man who was shot and killed in West Toledo on the last day of 2012 was a University of Toledo student who, according to his Web site, wrote and produced hip-hop music.

Brian Minley, 24, was found Monday afternoon inside a house at 1241 Berdan Ave. near Willys Parkway, where he was shot at least once, Toledo police said.

He was pronounced dead at 3:15 p.m. at Toledo Hospital, said Steve Kahle, a Lucas County coroner’s investigator.

An autopsy was scheduled for Wednesday, said Dr. Diane Scala-Barnett, a deputy coroner for the county.

Mr. Minley graduated from Scott High and studied psychology at the University of Toledo, he wrote on his Web site. He posted his music on the Web.

Toledo police Sgt. William Wauford said the victim was in critical condition when he was taken to the hospital with wounds that were “definitely not self-inflicted.”

Investigators did not have a suspect, he said.

Police would not say what the motive in the shooting might have been.

A woman told police she saw a man with curly hair running from the scene.

He was wearing a hooded jacket, she said.

Two other women were whisked away by police.

The younger woman was in tears and shouting, “We need to pray hard!”

Corey Draper, 24, a neighbor, said he did not see or hear any commotion; the first sign of trouble that he saw was the arrival of police patrol cars up next door at 1241 Berdan.

“She's a real quiet neighbor, taking care of her 5-year-old daughter,” Mr. Draper said, speaking of the woman who lives at 1241 Berdan.

“She had a boyfriend, who lived there. I knew him as Brian. ... There was never any trouble,” he added.

The slaying is the 39th homicide in 2012 in the city of Toledo. It brings to 53 the number of homicides in metro Toledo during 2012.

There was no word of arrests.

University of Toledo spokesmen could not be reached for comment.
