FINDLAY — An inmate at the Hancock County jail was found dead in his cell Thursday after an apparent suicide. Sheriff Michael Heldman said deputies found Thaddeus Campbell, 23, of Findlay, dead in his cell just after 3 p.m. He declined to discuss the circumstances.

“We’re investigating it as a suicide, and the coroner will probably be releasing as to what the cause of death was,” he said.

Mr. Campbell had been in the jail since Oct. 18. He served 31 days for a probation violation from a petty-theft conviction, then remained at the jail after being indicted for receiving stolen property. Lt. Ryan Kidwell, jail administrator, said Mr. Campbell had not exhibited signs of being suicidal and was not on any kind of watch.

The suicide was the first reported at the jail since its 1989 opening.
