The woman who who fell through the ice Sunday on the Maumee River and was pulled to safety by rescuers in a Washington Township Fire Department hovercraft remains hospitalized.

Renee Williams, 35, of South Toledo, was listed today in serious condition in intensive care at Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center.

Toledo police said Ms. Williams is being treated for hypothermia from being exposed to frigid temperatures while clinging to the side of ice after falling into the water.

Police said she was spotted walking on the ice near the Imagination Station shortly before 11 a.m. Sunday by an employee of the Grand Plaza Hotel on Summit Street.

She apparently went into the water as she walked to the east bank of the river. Divers with the Toledo Fire Department Water Rescue crawled on the ice to reach the woman, coming within about 100 feet of her before firefighters in the township hovercrafts took over the rescue operation.

Firefighters in the two hovercrafts, which were launched down river, pulled her out of the water about noon. It is unclear why Ms. Williams went on the ice or what caused her to fall into the river.
