PORT CLINTON -- Two Port Clinton residents were injured, one seriously, in a single-vehicle crash about 4:25 a.m. today on State Road west of Gypsum Road in Ottawa County's Portage Township, the Ohio Highway Patrol said.

Roy D. Cox II, 31, was driving westbound on State Road when he failed to negotiate a right curve and went off the road where the driver's side of the car struck on iron I-beam supporting a roadside billboard, troopers said. The driver was transported to Port Clinton’s Magruder Hospital and later transported by ambulance (an air ambulance was unable to respond due to weather conditions) to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo for treatment of incapacitating injuries, troopers said.

A hospital spokesman said Mr. Cox's condition was not available.

An occupant in the car, 29-year-old Casey M. Wadsworth, suffered non-incapacitating injuries and was taken to Magruder Hospital. A hospital spokesman had no patient there by that name.

The driver and passenger were trapped in the vehicle; crews used hydraulic equipment to free them. Neither the driver nor the passenger was wearing a seat belt, however, the vehicle’s front air bags deployed, troopers said

No charges have been filed and the crash remains under investigation.
