Toledo Mayor Mike Bell announced today that he would hire 50 new police officers this year – up from 45 he had promised for the year.

The new recruits will be hired in the fall and the additional five officers will cost the city an additional $88,000 through the end of 2013, Mr. Bell said.

The added expense in the 2013 general fund budget would be made up through increased revenue assumptions from sources like red light and speed camera fines, said Deputy Mayor Steve Herwat.

The city also plans to hire 30 firefighter recruits in July.
