City sues Toledo man for wrecked police car

A Toledo man who in September was sentenced in Lucas County Common Pleas Court to community control for causing a crash with a police vehicle has been sued civilly by the city for the price of the patrol car.

The city sued Jarred Harris in common pleas court Wednesday for the sum of replacing the vehicle plus administrative fees. The complaint seeks $35,466.25.

In a criminal case filed as a result of the crash, Harris pleaded no contest to vehicular assault and was sentenced Sept. 7 to two years on community control, including 30 days on electronic monitoring.

According to a traffic report, Officers Paul Marchyok, Robert Orwig, and Neil Piasecki were injured when their vehicle was struck at South Avenue and Stebbins Street on Feb. 4. Officer Marchyok was driving a sport utility vehicle with limited markings east on South on the way to assist other officers when Harris, who was traveling north on Stebbins, failed to stop for a stop sign.

The officers’ vehicle went off the road and struck a tree.
