A traffic violation was the reason why a Toledo police cruiser pursued a car that struck another vehicle, sending two Toledo men to an area hospital today, police said.

Sharon Roscoe, 24, the driver of the pursued vehicle, and Matthew Breckler, 30, the driver of the second vehicle, were taken to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center with injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening, Toledo police Sgt. Joe Heffernan said. Their conditions weren't available.

Sergeant Heffernan said police tried to stop a car about 10:50 a.m. at City Park Avenue and Nebraska Avenue. The car appeared to be pulling over, but then took off, at which time police gave chase but failed to stop it until it crashed about a minute later at Collingwood Boulevard and Hamilton Street, the sergeant said.

Once the cars collided, a passenger in the pursued vehicle ran from the scene while the driver was being apprehended, Sergeant Heffernan said. Police did not know who the passenger was or why he had fled the scene, he said.

Sergeant Heffernan said he did not know what the traffic violation was. A felony charge of fleeing and eluding police against Mr. Roscoe was pending his release from the hospital, the sergeant said.
