A Michigan man who allegedly burglarized a home was shot today by a law enforcement officer after he fled into a wooded area near Thompson and Bayer roads, Perrysburg Township police said.
The suspect, believed to be in his early 30s, was taken to Toledo Hospital with non life-threatening wounds and was expected to undergo surgery, Sgt. James Gross said.
Police were not releasing the name of the suspect or the officer involved in the shooting, which is being investigated by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation and Identification.
Sergeant Gross said the man was shot about 12:15 p.m. by an officer from another department that was called to assist in the search.
About an hour before the shooting, township police were patroling the area as part of an effort to increase security because of a rash of home burglaries in Wood County and the township. Sergeant Gross, who was in an unmarked vehicle, located the suspect's pickup truck that was parked on Roachton Road.
Sergeant Gross said items that were believed to have been taken from an earlier break-in on Roachton were in the truck bed. Subsequently, police saw a man run from a home on Thompson to the surrounding woods.
A township officer and the canine unit were sent into the woods to track the suspect and officers from other departments were called to assist in the search and surround the perimeter.
Police said the man was shot when he came out of the woods. Sergeant Gross said he couldn't comment on whether the suspect was armed because of the on-going investigation.
He said police are reviewing evidence to determine if the man may have been involved in recent burglaries.
