MONROE -- A tractor-trailer driver was seriously injured today when his rig struck a large piece of steel on I-75 dropped by another semi and then struck a passenger vehicle.

The injured driver, whose name was not released, was taken to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo and was in serious condition, Monroe police said. The person in the passenger vehicle was treated at the scene.

The crash occurred about 11:55 a.m. on southbound I-75 at Front Street.

The semi that struck the steel went out of control, hit the passenger vehicle, and jackknifed, police said. The interstate was restricted to one lane for several hours, but all lanes were clear by 3 p.m.

The rig that dropped the steel was based at a nearby industrial business, police said. The driver was cited for several violations by the Michigan State Police motor carrier division.
