Woman, child injured in Monroe County crash

MONROE -- A Monroe woman and a child were injured today when a car struck a tractor-trailer rig in the rear in Monroe County's Berlin Township, authorities said.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office identified the injured car driver as Danielle Romanoski, 31. The child's name and age were not released. The victims' injuries appeared serious, according to the sheriff's office.

Ms. Romanoski was driving east on Newport Road near I-75 about 8 a.m. when the car struck the rear of a semi that was turning left onto westbound Newport from a Marathon Gas Station on the south side of the road, according to the sheriff's office. The accident occurred east of Newport Towne Drive.

The crash closed a section of Newport. Traffic on the road returned to normal sometime before 10:30 a.m., according to the sheriff's office traffic section.

Larry Martin, age 52, of Newport, Mich., the driver of the semi, was not injured.

The crash remained under investigation.
