PORT CLINTON -- Ottawa County sheriff's detectives are investigating the unexpected death today of a 3-month-old boy.

The sheriff's office received a 911 call about 11:20 a.m. from the infant's father in the 1200 block of Fremont Road in Bay Township to report that the boy was not breathing, Sheriff Stephen Levorchick said. The father performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation, under the direction of the operator, until an ambulance arrived.

The infant was pronounced dead at Magruder Hospital in Port Clinton.

"We are not aware of any previous illness or handicaps," Sheriff Levorchick said. "We're not aware of any previous incidents that would lead us to believe that there were pre-existing medical conditions."

The sheriff would not characterize the nature of the investigation. He said that any time there is the death of an infant, "there are questions you need to answer," the sheriff said. "We need to make sure all the answers are acquired."

The infant's mother was at work. The father also was caring for a 3-year-old daughter at the family apartment. That child remains with the parents.

So far in the investigation, "we don't have any proof of wrongdoing," Sheriff Levorchick said.

The sheriff's office did not release the names of the children or parents.
