PORT CLINTON — Two volunteers were injured at Island Safe Harbor Animal Sanctuary, where shelter authorities said they were bitten by a boxer mix dog Tuesday night.

The victims’ names were not released. One was treated at Firelands Regional Medical Center, Sandusky. The other did not seek treatment, said Nancy R. Benevento, chief executive of the sanctuary, 3620 E. State Rd.

Responding Ottawa County sheriff’s deputies were confronted by a dog that would not let them get to the victims, their report said. They shot and injured the dog and evacuated the victim, the report said. The dog was later euthanized.
