Lake-effect band of snow causes tough commute for some morning drivers

Two non-injury crashes and several slide-offs occurred between 7:30 a.m. and 8 a.m. today on snow-slickened I-75 and I-475 near Perrysburg, snagging traffic, the Ohio Highway Patrol said.

John Mayers, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service office in Cleveland, said the snow in Maumee and Perrysburg was the product of a lake-effect band from Lake Michigan that was enhanced by unstable air off Lake Erie. The snow fell in a very localized area; Toledo Express Airport received just a trace, as did most of South Toledo and downtown.

Lake-effect snow also fell to the east, south of Lake Erie, with heavier amounts toward the Cleveland area.
