A large quantity of pipe insulation containing asbestos was illegally dumped last year in a wooded area on Old Stateline Road in western Lucas County near Swanton, the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency said Wednesday.

The material, believed to have been used in heating systems, was found in November on residential property in the 10000 block of Old Stateline, west of the Kitty Todd Preserve.

The pipe diameter would have been about 8 inches.

The EPA, which is investigating the dumping, believes the pipes were removed or stolen from a building by people seeking scrap metal.

The EPA is asking that anyone who may have seen trucks entering the property or have information about the buildings where the pipes were obtained to contact Rick Hassinger at the Ohio EPA’s Northwest District Office in Bowling Green at 419-352-8461 or 800-686-6930.
