Authorities have identified Jacob Reprogle, 31, of Temperance, as the person who was killed today in Bedford Township when the car he was driving struck a utility pole, causing a power outage in the immediate vicinity.
Mr. Reprogle was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office. He was driving alone and was not wearing a seat belt, sheriff deputies said.
The car was driving north on Jackman Road north of State Line Road about 2 a.m. when it traveled off the east side of the road, striking a utility pole and a small tree before coming to rest, according to the sheriff's office.
Terry DeDoes, a spokesman for Consumers Energy, said 23 utility customers lost their electric service as a result of the crash. Crews worked to restore the service to all of the affected customers.
Jackman Road reopened to traffic after 11 a.m. after repair crews left the scene.
Sheriff deputies were investigating speed and roadway conditions as likely factors in the crash, according to a written statement released by the office.
