FREMONT — The discovery on Sunday of an unidentified male along a road south of Fremont near the Sandusky River remains under investigation.

The body has been turned over to the Lucas County Coroner’s Office, which is conducting an autopsy, Jim Consolo, a detective captain for the Sandusky County Sheriff’s Office, said Monday.

Results of the autopsy, which was conducted Monday, were unavailable.

A group of fishermen discovered the body on Sunday near the river as they were walking in the shallow part of the water, Captain Consolo said. Authorities were called to the 1400 block of Sand Street near North Street, just outside the city limits, at 12:37 p.m.

The sheriff’s office is working with the Fremont Police Department on the case. Authorities are trying to determine whether the body found is that of a person missing since mid-January, Captain Consolo said.
