OAK HARBOR, Ohio -- A Fremont woman is dead and her husband is in the hospital after a shooting today at a home on Leutz Road in Carroll Township near here.

According to Carroll Township Police Chief Jody Hatfield, Amy Ross, 43, had been staying with her sister in the Leutz Road home for about a month when her husband, Randy Ross, showed up there today. He forced his way into the farmhouse shortly before noon, chased the victim up the stairs, and shot her once in the chest, killing her.

It is believed that at least the victim's teenage niece was in the home at the time of the shooting.

Mr. Ross, of County Road 265 in Fremont, then shot himself twice in the head but he was walking around in the front yard when Chief Hatfield, the first officer on the scene, arrived. The suspect was taken by Life Flight to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo where his condition was not immediately known.

Ginger Velliquette, 44, a roommate of Ms. Ross's from her time at Bowling Green State University showed up at the shooting scene in mid-afternoon and said she was supposed to have a catch-up lunch with Ms. Ross today in Oregon. But at 9:56 a.m., the Graytown, Ohio resident said she received a text from Ms. Ross cancelling the lunch because she said she was bringing more furniture to her sister's home.
