Community action group to sponsor drug turn-in

The Sylvania Community Action Team, in cooperation with the Sylvania Township and Sylvania city police departments, will hold a community Drug Take Back Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on April 27.

The program, in its fourth year, is one of two such days each year when people may turn in expired or unneeded prescription drugs for disposal. SCAT, a nonprofit that aims to prevent youth drug and alcohol abuse, sponsors the effort with the assistance of a $7,000 grant from the Mental Health and Recovery Services Board of Lucas County.

The items can be dropped off at the city police department, 6635 Maplewood Ave., and the township police department, 4420 King Rd. Along with prescription and over-the-counter drugs, veterinary medications, and vitamins also will be accepted.

Besides diverting prescription drugs away from possible illicit street sales, Deb Chany, SCAT’s executive director, said the program helps prevent accidental overdose in children.

“Others don’t know what to do with medicine that remains after a surgery. And this also ensures we don’t put medication in our water systems,” Mrs. Chany said, referring to damage caused when people improperly flush medication in toilets.
