Driver leads officers on chase across state line
4/12/2013MONROE — A Toledo man was arrested and accused of leading law enforcement agents on a vehicle pursuit that began in Toledo and ended in the city of Monroe today, authorities said.
The driver, an 18-year-old man, was charged with possession of stolen property and fleeing and eluding. He was booked into the Monroe County jail. His name was not released.
About 2:05 a.m., a Toledo police officer who was pursuing a stolen vehicle north on Detroit Avenue gave up the pursuit in the area of Telegraph and Sterns roads and notified the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, authorities said.
A short time later, sheriff’s deputies spotted the vehicle driving north on Telegraph Road near Minx Road and tried to stop it. The pursued vehicle — a red Ford Explorer — did not stop and continued north on Telegraph at speeds between 40 and 50 mph, deputies said.
After two unsuccessful attempts to disable the sport utility vehicle with stop sticks, the pursuit continued north on Telegraph into the city of Monroe, where city police successfully used stop sticks and stopped the vehicle by flattening two of its tires, according to the sheriff’s office.
The pursuit continued north at about 30 mph via South Custer Road, Winston Drive, and Winston Court. The SUV then drove through a city park until it was blocked by a fence and stopped, at which time the driver and three occupants were taken into custody, sheriff deputies said. The other three occupants were released after questioning.
