Perrysburg deputy chief Gilmore to retire then take same post with township

A Perrysburg deputy police chief plans to retire from city employment May 1, then start two months later with the Perrysburg Township police with the same job title but entry-level pay.

For Perrysburg Township, the deputy chief position Michael Gilmore is to assume July 1 is a new title, but Chief Mark Hetrick said he expects two of his lieutenants to leave soon and he plans to replace only one of them.

Deputy Chief Gilmore, 57, will receive his retirement pension from the city while working for the township, but said he will obtain health care through the township rather than from the pension.

Chief Hetrick retired himself Dec. 31 and was rehired by the township March 4. Chief Hetrick said Deputy Chief Gilmore will receive $56,000, with two weeks’ annual vacation.

Deputy Chief Gilmore said he brings with him extensive special weapons and tactics training and experience running Toledo’s police academy. “The upside is the township is getting my experience ... for an entry-level patrol rate,” he said.

“This new position will be something very valuable to the police department with [Deputy Chief Gilmore’s] training and experience,” Chief Hetrick said.

Chief Hetrick said he decided the township needed the position once he heard deputy chief Gilmore was leaving the city’s department.

Deputy Chief Gilmore said he and Chief Hetrick “are very much in line with the way we think, and I think it makes a real good match.”

Before his hiring in Perrysburg almost three years ago, Deputy Chief Gilmore had been with the Toledo Police from 1986 to 2010, and had been a sergeant there since 1997.

The township police also hired Barrett Dorner as a full-time dispatcher. For more than a year, Mr. Dorner has volunteered with the fire department. He now is a producer as WTOL-TV, Channel 11. He will start next week and be paid $20.91 a hour to start. “As a volunteer, I know this is a great place to work,” Mr. Dorner said. “I couldn’t pass up this opportunity.”
