Fremont man who killed his wife then shot himself released from hospital

Randall Ross, who authorities say killed his wife and then shot himself twice in the head in March, was released from Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center today and charged with her death.

Mr. Ross, 47, of Fremont, was charged with one count of aggravated murder upon his hospital release, said Ottawa County Sheriff Stephen Levorchick.

Although he is technically an inmate of the Ottawa County jail, Mr. Ross was transferred to Port Clinton's Magruder Hospital, and is housed “in a hospital room with security coverage," the sheriff said, adding that the Ottawa County jail cannot accommodate Mr. Ross yet, because of his medical treatment.

“We don't have the facilities at our jail to care for him,” Sheriff Levorchick said.

Authorities say that on March 27, Mr. Ross stormed a two-story farmhouse on Mar. 27, where his estranged wife was staying with her sister, and shot her with a 40-caliber handgun. Amy Ross, 43, had recently moved to the farmhouse at 3121 Leutz Rd., which was owned by her sister, Andrea Swope.

When Carroll Township police officials arrived on the scene,Mr. Ross was found staggering around on the driveway of the residence, authorities have reported. He was ordered down by police and paramedics were dispatched to the scene. He was airlifted to St. Vincent, where he was being treated until his release Wednesday afternoon.

The sheriff declined to elaborate on Mr. Ross' injuries.

“I don't really want to get into his injuries, because of the fact that I'm not a doctor,” he said.

Sheriff Levorchick said an arraignment date will be set by the court.
